The Mobile Confusion!
Mobile phones; the walkman for the 21st Century…at least until fully interactive holographic technology comes along. Love them or loathe them, it is inconceivable that you don’t own one. In fact a survey conducted last year showed that over 50% of residents in the UK barely use their landlines for telephone calls at home anymore with many considering getting rid of their landlines completely. The problem is which is the best mobile to get these days?
With so much to choose from it’s hard to make an informed decision. The first question you should be asking yourself is what you use your phone for the most? Is it just a device for calling people? Do you use the internet on it a lot? Do you video phone people? Do you use it a lot when travelling abroad? Let’s take these one at a time.
1. Do you mostly use your phone for calling people?
If the answer is yes, then you don’t need to worry about getting a Smartphone. They are great for everything except making phone calls and difficult to hold up to your ear for long periods of time. You will also notice the phone getting increasingly hot as you talk – you are essentially holding a small super computer up to your ear.
2. Do you use the internet on your phone a lot?
If the answer is yes then there are two essentials to consider here. Firstly a Smartphone makes navigating the web a lot easier then a traditional handset with buttons does. The screen size is bigger allowing for a better view and the touch screens available on most Smartphones make access very simple. The other essential to consider is whether you travel abroad a lot and use the internet on your phone when you do. If the answer here is yes then you really do need to consider getting a sim card just for travelling. There are many alternatives and I found a great offer at http://www.abroadband.com that has allowed me to avoid high roaming rates when travelling.
3. Do you video phone people?
If yes then a Smartphone is an essential for you. None of the older phones on the market can handle the data capacity a video call requires. Whilst video calls aren’t as common as the advertiser would have you believe, the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy have shown that they can handle the data required very well. With the announcement of the iPhone 5’s release date in a matter of weeks video calls are probably going to become more popular.
4. Do you use your phone a lot when travelling abroad?
If yes, then I would refer you back to the comments made earlier about using the internet on your phone.

There are many detailed phone reviews available and The Telegraph online recently published a helpful article to help consumers decide on the best handsets here. Apply the questions in this article to each of the handsets reviewed and you should be able to find a phone that’s right for you.
