Shopaholics

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a lot of people have got into debt on their credit cards since online shopping became popular. Unlike High Street shopping, when you hand over your card and receive a service in return, shopping on the internet often feels like you’re not handing over any cash at all. Services like Paypal and websites that store your card details male impulse purchases as easy as clicking a button – literally – and it can take a lot of willpower not to keep upping the bid on that gorgeous top you’ve seen on ebay because you know it would cost so much more in the shop…
It is very hard to be strong, but I realised I had to take some action when I found myself paying for liposuction I didn’t really want or need simply because it was available for such a cheap price! Yes, I was actually buying bargain surgery for myself. That’s when you know you have a problem! If you find you really have got a serious problem with your shopping habits, then you might need more help than my advice can provide and you might be better off talking to your bank manager. But if your situation hasn’t yet spiralled out of control, then there are a few things you can do to control your spending habits.
Firstly, make sure no websites that you use for shopping store your card details. This isn’t just a good idea to help restrict your shopping,it is also much more secure. All someone needs to do is Phish your log-in details to Amazon or Paypal and suddenly they’d have access to your debit and credit cards or even your bank account. Paypal is a very useful tool to have access to, especially if you buy a lot of stuff on ebay, but most sellers will accept other payments. If ebay has taken over your life, it might be time to shut down your Paypal account. By making it more difficult for you to buy something, it makes you think just a little bit longer about whether you want or need the thing your mouse arrow is hovering over.
